The DAILY DIRT - The nitty and the gritty of outdoor news

Backcountry Beer: Almost Here!

Beer-in-a-bag would enable easy brews, spasms of joy for backpackers

We put a man on the moon. We climbed Everest. We even invented the iPhone. But all of these past achievements pale before the pinnacle of human invention: Beverage Pouch Group's beer-in-a-bag CarboPouch™. Finally we can pack in beer to the most remote wilderness spots, without having to pack out pesky bottles and cans—just pack down the empty pouch, or better yet, blow them up for extra cushioning under your Thermarest.

Before you get into too much of a lather over your suds, keep in mind that no beer makers have picked this packaging method up—yet. Smart breweries, micro and macro, would do well to start marketing these to the outdoor crowd (I'm looking at you, Fat Tire). Manufacturers note that the packaging is "suitable for outdoor activities," which, given the proclivities of most outdoorsy peeps I know, is quite an understatement.

As long as everyone keeps to leave-no-trace principles with these babies, they could be the greatest outdoor invention since...ever. And we already know that beer is the best way to stay hydrated, so it's kind of an important health issue.

The gauntlent has been thrown, master brewers. Get going on your backcountry blends, and send all your preliminary samples for safety testing to The Daily Dirt, c/o Ted Alvarez.

Well, I love the idea. If I owned a brewery, I would do it.

I dunno. If you're packing all that liquid weight already, what's the big deal if you have to carry out a few crushed cans? Once in a while I'll drag a six of Caldera ( http://www.calderabrewing.com/ ) along, but it's better to bring something that's for sipping, imo.
