Saddle Sore? Tips To Heal Your Rear

Experiencing a sore butt on the trail? Try these healing tips.

by: Buck Tilton

Life on the trail can be a pain in the behind, literally. Constant chafing and infrequent bathing can cause a superficial inflammation of the groin and anus (aka crotch rot) that leaves you feeling like you're sitting on the stove instead of near it. Staying clean with wet wipes and lubed with petroleum jelly prevents most problems, but if your bottom's seriously ablaze, try these proven methods of relief.

Tuck's or Preparation H medicated pads. Both contain a combination of witch hazel and water. The pads come individually wrapped and are oh-so-soothing.

Cornstarch. You'll find this lightweight powder near the flour in the grocery store. Sprinkle it on for protection and a big boost to healing.

Gyne-Lotrimin or Monistat. These topical creams, sold as treatment for yeast infections in women, provide instant relief and long-lasting protection as you mend. Apply any of these after a bowel movement and before heading out for the day and retiring at night.
