Stay away from mice out on the trail, and you'll stay away from disease-carrying ticks.
Unless you've been on Neptune for the past few years, by now you've heard that deer ticks carry Lyme disease. Here's a new wrinkle, though: Studies in New Jersey have found that the coats of mice are the preferred stomping grounds of the deer tick. So if you really want to remain Lyme-free, carefully check yourself for ticks after camping in mouse havens like wooded areas and trail shelters. Campsites in the middle of open fields are least likely to be overrun by tick-ridden mice.
