Clear out your car before heading into the woods.
Behave as you would in bear country, and don't leave tasty valuables in sight. Sounds obvious, but 90 percent of thefts involve lustables left in plain view, says Sheriff Ed Holte of Lake County, CO. Another no-no: Never stash stuff in the woods. In high-risk areas, crooks often case parking lots, watching what you do. And don't post your itinerary on the dash. Leave it with rangers, so shady folks won't be privy to your plans.
