I didn't write the rant below. I read it on the Facebook page of a friend of a friend, Konrad Maziarz, and I thought it was an appropriate response to much current political discussion. Off base? Or does it sum it up for you too?
This morning I was awoken by my alarm clock powered by electricity generated by the public power monopoly regulated by the US Department of Energy. I then took a shower in the clean water provided by the municipal water utility. After that, I turned on the TV to one of the FCC regulated channels to see what the National Weather Service of the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration determined the weather was going to be like using satellites designed, built, and launched by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. I watched this while eating breakfast of US Department of Agriculture inspected food and taking the drugs which have been determined as safe by the Food and Drug Administration.
At the appropriate time as regulated by the US Congress and kept accurate by the National Institute of Standards and Technology and the US Naval Observatory. I get into my National Highway Traffic Safety Administration approved automobile and set out to work on the roads built by the local, state, and federal departments of transportation, possibly stopping to purchase additional fuel of a quality level determined by the Environmental Protection Agency, using legal tender issued by the Federal Reserve bank. On the way out the door I deposit any mail I have to send via the US Postal Service and drop the kids off at the public school.
After work, I drive my NHTSA car back home on the DOT roads, to a house which has not burned down in my absence because of the state and local building codes and fire marshal's inspection, and which has not been plundered of all it's valuables thanks to the local police department.
I then log on to the internet which was developed by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Administration and post on freerepublic.com and Fox News forums about how SOCIALISM in medicine is BAD because the government can't do anything right.

I LOVE THIS ARTICLE!!!!! Please don't be intimidated by right-wingers who are threatening to cancel their subscriptions because of supposedly "left wing" articles like this one.
Whose side are they on? The side of Teddy Roosevelt and the National Park Service, or freaking Glenn Beck? Talk about people voting against their own self interest!

First of all we don't fund USPS (Yet), and look at quasi government entities like TVA (you know who has cheap power [no brown outs] and no water shortages? East Tennessee - Not to mention its a self funding entity)

I did not renew my subscription to Backpacker because of the left-wing political articles, such as an entire issue dedicated to supporting the now discredited world-wide scam called "global warming" or "climate change." One comment on Berne Broudy's love affair with NOAH: when does any weather forecast get it right beyond about 24 hours?

Guys, I read Backpacker for info on the outdoors, camping, and backpacking. Please don't start with the politics.
What, precisely, do the NHTSA, the FDA, or the FCC have to do with backpacking?

Yes to those things it operates well. No to all the things (like Medicare, Social Security, Amtrak, Postal Service, etc) that need constant funding (the ever expanding black holes that they are) and never remain fiscally solvent.
Please name three Government run programs that aren't riddle with fraud, waste and abuse and operate at a deficit nuetral level or make a profit!!! (Oh, hell, name just one)

First, it's the people who work for those government agencies that are responsible for successful implementation.
Next, it's not that "government can't do anything right." It's how much we want government to regulate how many things in our lives. Some think there should be more regulation, and some think there should be less.

Your rant proves nothing, but boasts of the many ways government intrudes in our lives. No one is arguing against government regulation of anything -- what we are seeing is government incompetence in ANY enterprise that could be run by the private sector.
Public power - no, quasi-government entities help with the organization -- private entities produce and transmit.
Water - why are we all drinking bottled water?
Weather - they do good work here, but most of watch the forecasts of the local stations
TV (FCC) - again, the value of TV is fading, but the FCC exercises limited control here
USDA - haven't you seen enough expose TV on this to realize they're not doing this job.
FDA - this is a loosely regulated industry. GMP and clinical trials enforce a mostly private industry focus on the therapies we all take. Medicare does help push funding along, though.
Time - US Congress? NIST? These are international standards.
NHTSA - Insurance industry organizations do as much to keep us safe here
Roads - with all the bridges falling down and tunnels collapsing to kill people you want to give them credit here?
EPA - huh?
Federal Reserve - thank you for three recent boom/bust cycles they couldn't stop
USPS - HAH, Fedex and UPS would have put these guys out of business years ago if we weren't funding this
DARPA - Internet yes, but Berners-Lee was working for the US government, was he?
Government certainly has a role. They should have kept their role to regulation vs take over. Independent overseers is what we needed helping making tough decisions, not using bad results to enforce a program designed not to fix anything.
