I love Backpacker Magazine and I wish I could submit one of my photos to the contest, but giving up the rights to one's photography isn't worth a chance at winning a backpack. Its a shame, I'd love to have something of mine printed in the pages of such a great magazine.

Yes, if you saw the note "Thank you for your participation in our survey!" that means your photo was received. I have since updated the text after submission so it is clearer that your photo was received.

Everyone who is submitting a photograph should be well aware of the fine print and legal consequences. Basically, your photo will become the property of Active Interest Media and can be used for whatever they want in the future without compensation to you. Here are a couple excerts from the fine print that are nicely tucked away:

In part 1. - By acceptance of a prize, winners consent to the use of their names, photographs or other likenesses, testimonials and other biographical information for any and all purposes, including, but not limited to, advertising, trade and/or promotion on behalf of Active Interest Media (AIM) without further compensation, unless prohibited by law.

In part 2. - Entries become the property of the Sponsor and will not be returned. Submission of entry constitutes permission for Active Interest Media to publish the entry, in any medium without compensation to entrant and to use entrant's submitted information for any purpose, including marketing and promotion.

Just thought you should know what you're agreeing to when submitting a photo.
