2010 Photo Contest: the Outtakes

This year's Backpacker Photo Contest was a tight race. Here, see outstandings photos that just missed the cut. See the January 2010 issue for the winners.
  • Milford sound. After much needed pizza and beer, the clouds broke to reveal one of the most stunning vistas in New Zealand, bathing the mountains in a soft, cozy evening light. (Jessica Barr)
  • I was photographing the fall colors in Uncompahgre National Forest in Colorado when this band of light appeared just long enough to take a few frames. It was one of the most spectacular displays I have ever seen. (Tim Ferrara)
  • This is my son Andres (14) and I on the summit of Mt. Baldy 12,441 Cimarron, NM, in 90-plus mph winds. This was one of the only times we attempted to stand. We were part of a crew of 11 in the Philmont High Adventure Scout Camp. (Andy Littig)
  • At ground level this crab is poised to attack the lens. Castelhanos Beach, Ilhabela Brazil. (Douglas Capper)
  • A couple of Prairie Dog pups watching some park visitors walk past in Badlands National Park's Prairie Dog Town. (Erik Unger)
  • The dogwood and redbud trees were spectacular on an early spring backpack through Kentucky's Red River Gorge. (Tim Ferrara)
  • "Feed Me!" (Deborah Scanlon)
  • Upset Rapid on the Colorado River in Grand Canyon National Park. (Angela Keith)
  • Florida Gator photographed during a birding expedition through a South Florida Water Management - Stormwater Treatment Area located in western Palm Beach County, Florida. (Paul Strauss)
  • Roan Highlands, North Carolina. (Shannon Szwarc )
  • Bullfrog Lake below Kearsarge Pass, California. (Lauren Matt)
  • Parting Clouds on Mount Monroe, taken on Mt Washington's Crawford Pass. (Bob Misuraca)
  • East Arm of Great Slave Lake, Canada. This night was one of the scariest in my life. Massive waves of water were smashing against the ice beneath me, making it feel like an ongoing earthquake. I didn't get much sleep that night. (Nick Sweeting)

Just gorgeous! This reminds you why we go out there in the first place. The beautiful thing about this photo is that it is so pure - a complete capture of a perfect, tranquil moment.

When I see this photo I want to throw the pack on and hit the trail. That is what makes this photo great.
