Appreciate the update and congratz to all the winners!
Thanks for the update on the last several weeks winners, and congrats to the winners.
Any updates? Great work Backpacker - you're the BEST!
Hey guys please show the names of the winners... otherwise we feel sad :) !!!! Keep up the good work!
No winners have been posted for several weeks.
What about these and last week winners!!!???? :)
Keep up the good work guys and thank you so much for the chance to win sweet gear
I really, really hope to win the Sierra Designs Cal 13 Sleeping bag!!!!
You guys rock!!!!!
This contest would be more fun if I won something! I do think it is great though, and hey it keeps getting me back to your web site (smart move).
Thanks for the giveaways. I think it's great that the stuff is used. Recycle and Reusing. Good for everyone. More people should do this.
one could only hope to win if not its a great magazine thanks for great articles
Why haven't any winners been announced in weeks? They've had various gear sweepstakes but no winners have been announced.
Is this called "Win Bears Gear" now?
When is backpacker's website going to be finished? It's still pretty buggy, e.g. trail search based on state. I do a search for the entire state of Georgia, and 4 out of 5 hits that come back are listed as Atlanta. Only 5 hits? One is listed as Chattanooga. Why not list the trail where it's located in the town from which the trailhead begins?
And in addition, those popups are awful.
Maybe it's time to clear out the list of winners except for the past 4 weeks or so. :) 90+ weeks is a long time......Is it possible to post the date of the weeks winner? Thanks!!
I love the gear giveaways! What a great promotional idea! I can only hope that I'm lucky enough to win at some point as a new backbacker!
OOOhhh year thrift stores in the Phoenix area are fantastic for finding great hiking and camping stuff! Check it out!!! Treasures await!
I keep checking for my name on that winners list.
Gear, shmear. My dad told me an excellent story of the summer he went on an epic backpacking trip through the Uintas with the boyscouts. His pack was made out of 2x4s lashed together with rope, his cooking pot was one of those big peach cans, which he still swears is the best.
That said, a new pack would be pretty sweet. . .
Thanks, Backpacker for all the inspiration!
I just read that my aunt won some pretty SWANK gear! I love and respect that woman so much it is like I won the gear myself. CONGRATULATIONS Tammy!
Man it would be nice to have some new gear for my scout trips and outings with the old man. Too bad i can't afford it. Say Backpacker, could you help me out?
I second the comments on recycling. I made a backpack out of a shower curtain and some dental floss, and a entire cookset and stove out of a Pepsi can.
If you don't win the prize you want don't worry. Backpacker will list the winners full name and hometown so just pay them a visit.
Come on, ya crybabies! My first gear came from a warehouse store. You get what you can afford and deal with it, like the rest of us. Have you tried thrift stores? Or Freecycle? I've found some really good stuff at thrift stores.Use your imaginations, instead of whining.
I'm now obsessed with winning lol. Some sick prizes!
Thanks for the chance to win..
For us heading off the beaten path have reaped some awsom view, terrain, and at times high anxiety. I would not attempted these trip if it weren't for the articles in Backpacker. They help in preparing us for the unexpected but the one item I will never head out with would be my hand held Gps it has save us a number of times. Keep the articles coming they do reach a few of us.
If I am Locky & win, That'd be way cool. If not, I tried & the U.S.A. is a wonderful place to be. Be Happy
I love this newsletter! Especially the "Ask a Bear", one of my personal favorites. Thanks for the insights and the give a ways are also exceptionally cool. Thanks for being a great source for us outdoorsie peoples! Kudos to you all! C:
Well written articles that span the country. I fly for a living and use BPM and geocaching to find the hikes, parks, etc that are off the beaten path. All that and a chance at free gear. thanks.
Every time I try to enter the page is expired!
I agree. If you win some great equipment - AWESOME! If not, you get the best you can afford until you can get better. Don't resort to begging for freebies. 95% of my equipment is from Walmart or K-Mart, and it all serves it's purpose adequately.
What a dope!
mendicant cdns need love too! lots of very cool stuff your giving away!
What a bunch of SUCK-UPS!!!!
Thanks backpacker! U give me something to do even though I don't get out enough. I live through your magazin. I on't like beggers, I don't like winers! I know people that go camping with crap for equipment, its not the stuff that makes it fun. It's their attitude that makes it fun. A real backpacker/camper only needs a good knife. All the gagits r nice but keep it real! If u can't go without the gagits u shouldn't be out there!
Its really disapointing to see the crying going on wanting free stuff. Here in the south we dont take lightly to this kind of poor me attitude. Get off your butt and work for this stuff like the rest of us! Thank you to backpacker for the chance to win something!

Ive always have love the outdoors and camping, but i have never been backpacking, which i have been wanting to try.See the thing is all of the Backpacking equipment ,like a good backpack is really expensive! and i would hat to go and buy a cheep backpack and have it fall apart on me on the first ten miles or so. but the other thing is if i go and buy an expensive backpack and then afther backpacking for a wile and then come to find out that i dontlike it, ill be left with an expensive backpack. So i guess what im trying to say or ask. can you guy help me out on geting a good backpack? Or how does the win a free gift work>lol
I just found out about BPM weekly gear give-away. I love this! I will be back every week to enter. Being a Washington St native transplanted to the Wash DC area, I have been trying to introduce my coworkers to the wonders of outdoor activities... new gear may be just the ticket needed to bribe them a little further out in the woods!
Waa, waa. What a bunch of babies. Stop begging and whining about your state. Are these the kind of "men" on the trails??? Sissies.

I'd love to see a Rhode Island winner on your list.
No one from Delaware has won yet :) Loved the section about 50 best hikes in 50 states about Delaware in the last issue. I live about 10 minutes from the park they mentioned and had no idea there was great hiking nearby.
give me free stuff
I would love to see someone from Idaho win. Especially someone with the initials RL but whoever wins I'm sure they are wishing the same for themselves. Good Luck to all!!!!
I would love to win this as I do a lot of desert hiking and my current bag is wearing out. Last month in Monument Valley area I woke up at 2am shivering not expecting it to get so cold.
Some quick stats based on what’s posted…32 states represented with AK-2; AL-1; AR-1; AZ-2; CA-5; CO-3; CT-1; FL-5; GA-1; HI-1; IA-1; IL-3; IN-1; KS-3; KY-2; LA-1; MD-1; MI-2; MN-1; MO-1; MT-1; NC-1; NJ-2; OH-3; OK-1; OR-1; PA-2; TN-2; TX-2; UT-1; WA-3; WI-2 and 2 Unknown…Broken down by “US Census borough” regions you’ve got North East – 5; Midwest – 14; South – 20; West – 17 with Unknown – 2. I agree, the Northeast could use some more lovin’. Regardless, thanks for the opportunity guys. Love the Magazine.
What happened to weeks 41, 53, 61, and 62??
You suck ups. Quit begging for free stuff. If the good folks here want to give their equipment away then they deserve to give it to whoever they choose. I am sure they are way too busy, researching and writing the next great articles for our enjoyment, to read all these comments from grown folk begging for their equipment. Sincerely, S. Bloom in HEADLAND AL. That's Headland, all one word, AL.
You guys should lay off Cali for the rest of the contest and more of the northeast.
How about Massachusetts? And not California.
I would really love to stop using this crappy Field and Stream tent that I have. ;)
I would be happy to win anything! thanks for the opportunity to enter!

Not a single winner from Missouri yet!!! We hike, camp and climb here also!!!
Why is it that all the shoe give aways are always real little? Are you guys against people with huge feet or what? I think the biggest I have seen is a mens 10 or something like that. Help a big brother out.

when can i win??? need that tent
Read the rules:
ELIGIBILITY: Open to legal residents of the 50 United States who are 18 years or older, at time of entry.
Only americans are winning, are canadians eligible?
Looking at the past winners, they seem fairly spread across the US...I have to ask how this is possible statistically. It looks like winners are selected based more on geographic location and not randomly...
do you think that Italians can win too? it seems that only american win!
Who won week 27?

Love that you guys do this!! Such a great idea!
loved your hunting story in the latest issue!hunters were the original conservationists.
Every year for Christmas my daughter gives me a subscription to Backpacker (must be 10 years now). Informative, inspiring, entertaining articles and features have nourished my backpacking soul and cultivated a passion for wilderness. Just finished the JMT with a broken tent zipper, torn fly and punctured footprint; could really use the BAFC2!
My husband has enligtened me to backpacking. Excellent past time and workout! I love it!
When are you picking a winner from Jersey?!
Backpacking is the single most fulfilling thing I have ever experienced. There is no such thing as too much gear. Trying to save money to buy all my gear for my 500 mile Continental Divide trip and I will post lots of pics. I hope to win... my fingers are crossed! I LOVE BACKPACKER!!!!!!!

Let me know when you have some adult size gear!
I havent any money for gear at the moment. And backpacking is the best way to enjoy the last unspoiled beauty earth has given us
We hike everywhere we visit and every chance we get. We live around the beautiful Land Between the Lakes and are always looking for new and more awesome places to go. Our problem is we always try to take someone that could use the therapy of the woods. Hence we could always use more items to "loan" to the extra's. We also help out the scouts as my husband is the scout master and tries to help the lest fortunate. However, that leaves us without something we need time and time again. Good thing about it, contests like this to help replenish supplies! Thanks for the opportunity.
Need to win some great gear. My gear is tried and true but.....starting to look like an add for duct tape. I want to retire early and get to some serious long distance hiking. I love your articles and gear advice!! See you out there!!
Good articles make a good magazine.
When are the contest winners going to be updated?
I'm leaving for 90 days in the Yukon in June 2011. Need everything, most of my stuff is shot. See my video @ Sherry Lee the next Wilderness Woman. Thanks a bunch,
I don't need any new gear, I have everything any anything anyone would want. But I do like to win stuff.
Backpacker Magazine ROCKS!!!
I don't need any new gear, I have everything any anything anyone would want. But I do like to win stuff.
Who won the Black Diamond pack?
hey, me and my family LOVE the adirondacks and hike them weekly. However after filing Bankruptcy equipment can be really hard to come by. Hint Hint Backpacker..... Could really use some new gear...
Aloha, last weeks size 9 boots would have been a bit of a squeeze on my size 11 feet...so I had to pass. But this week you're offering one of the 2 backpacks I've been seriously considering (& drooling over)lately (the other being the Arcteryx Altra). I think this is the new hot lash...Articulated backpacks. We just did one of our frequent Haleakala tours (stunning, as always) and I'm realy convinced that my current pack is ready to retire.
PLEASE, remind EVERYONE to use the purifying tabs for drinking water (even tho it may LOOK crystal-clear/pure!!). We were just delayed in our A-Trail jaunt by a microbe(we were soooo thirsty that we filtered the water, but neglected adding the tabs)....& had to be picked-up & taken home to recuperate & then return where we left-off!!!
Congrats to all who won gear. THANKS to Backpacker for the sweepstakes! --=^..^=--
I was wondering if you could think of opening this contest for your fellow readers from Canada and not just US?
Thanks
Alex
i think this is fun just thinkin that someone out there is gunna win. what a great idea this is, wish the car magazines would do the same.
I am prepared to recieve some nice gear.
it,s my turn not your
I could really use a new sleeping bag. Its my turn to win.
Is it my turn to win, I need some new (to me) gear!
I started hiking/backpacking after I retired from nursing 8 years ago. I read several comments about the costs of backpacking. Rather than shell out lots of money at first, I viewed hiking gear as a long term investment in comfort, safety, and feeding my need for adventure. So, each year I add a usually Backpacker recommended item. Started hiking with Leki poles, Kelty pack, Snow Peak/Titanium cookwares, 3M sleeping bag, Eureka XO tent, & boots (since replaced). I'm still hiking in the same inexpensive polyester shorts, Ts, bras, hoodie, & socks I bought 8 years ago. Have added to the socks, tho! I hike in warmish LA & on the AT in summer and probably don't primitive hike as much as young folks (around 100 miles/year for me). So,your investing in winter clothes is a long term investment in safety & comfort. Maybe cheap/expensive combo at first. I have only one of things so I buy carefully. Just invested in an Exped Air Pillow which I think I should have done years ago! And MSR Skinny 1 tent since hiking buddy moved to CA (on sale at Campmor which has good deals; ck out gear at stores then ck Campmor website). I would never just use the rain fly & wanted simplicity of single wall. GearSwap.com looked bogus to me. I really compare prices at many gear web sites before buying. Buy stuff at end of season sales is good. With all the UL gear, keeping new & replacement gear costs down can be an issue. I reviewed many camping pillows/reviews before I settled on the Exped (3 oz & no cover needed). Weight & safety are primary issues with me. Since hike alone a lot, husband insists I wear the SPOT 2. Safety can cost as much or more than gear. Phase In your gear. Buying one well researched, UL piece of gear or something for a safe adventure a year will set up you up fast. Faster when you're 70! Many thanks to Backpacker & the vendors for donating the gear. A chance to win gear is greatly appreciated by the large community of outdoor loving people.

I would like to thank Backpacker for having these contests and congratulate the winners even if I wasn't one. Yes There are real winners I have won on other sites. To Nate, You are such a whiner. I am 64,am in pain constantly from arthritis am on blood thinners because of blood clots so its dangerous if I fell. So I cannot go backpacking any more so enjoy it while you can. when I did go camping we just bought stuff off the rack at Walmart or wherever. We just wanted to get out there. You don't have to spend a fortune to enjoy nature
I hope the fivefingers' week contest isn't "pending" because they couldn't get in touch with the winner . . . my girlfriend actually wears a size 37, has a pair already that she loves and is wearing out quickly, and got last-minute-deployed out of the country after entering that contest. her phone obviously doesn't work out there, but her email does and it'd be really sad if she missed out because Backpacker only tried her phone number and not her email . . .
Thanks for the pack guys! It's the final push I needed to get my wife to hit the trails with me. Looking forward to helping her experience my favorite pastime. Ya'll are awesome!
I wanna win! Give us longer articles with real content. Trail journals, news on conservation and forestry, and which gear is overpriced crap.
Aren't we like two weeks behind in the contest? Those shoe thingys were to be given away last week and then the backpack this week? So shouldn't there be a new item up?
I am a gear geek! And i have never won anything please help and give me something before i die!!!
I like pie in sleeping bags
Re clothes for cheap. Is that possible? You may want to try EMS and REI Outlets. It may be older, sometimes last years models but at a reduced price. Sizes can be a challange though. And not just clothes...
Another source for inexpensive outdoor gear is campmor.com. They have a thick catalog printed on newsprint (not a lot of investment in slick catalogs) and good online ordering. Lots of brand names, last year's models and some current stuff.
Hello: I've seen alot of questions about finding good, cheap gear. Check out Sierra Trading Post! Most gear is first quality with some "seconds" with slight cosmetic issues, but good gear at great prices!
The winners really exist! Thanks Backpacker for the tent!
man it sucks being a poor climber/backpacker . having to skimp on most of the equipment except the most important, for me anyway, are shoes/boots. i have been wearing the five ten guides for about 4 years now anyone have any suggestions on getting good gear for cheap i know that's kinda an oxymoron "good gear cheap" but i mean i was looking at getting a patagonia r series layering system and it came to about 350 and that was for 2 shirts/1 jacket and the 350 was the cheaper patagonia stuff except for the jacket. i mean i know the clothes will last a long time, keep me comfortable, and pack nicely, plus many more things but its hard to justify spending $125 on a midlayer 1/4 zip or an $85 baselayer.
im also weary of buying used equipment (clothes especially) off of ebay or such other sites. anyone have any suggestions on getting quality clothes and such for cheap?
Do the winners really exists or is this just a ploy to get email addresses so we can receive more junk mail
I never win anything. This is a crock.
I hope you get some sweet booty in your new sleeping bag.
i like pie
Congratulations to this weeks winner. It looks like a great sleeping bag. Backpacker.com ROCKS
You go above and beyond every year with your Gear Guide and this year was no exception! Only wish one of these days I get to test the gear instead of reading about others opinions!
who won the sleeping bag?
Congratulations, Luke. Put lots of miles on it!
Thanks, Backpacker, your Best New Gear issue has become my favorite issue each year! It's the best way to shop right.
That bag is what i need for this summers vacation it would be awsome to recieve it wow that would be great!
It has been a few years since I've been on the trail due to family obligations. The magazine has been so helpful for me during my "time off". It has given me many ideas on my next adventure now that i'm back in action! The Destination sections are a hit! keep up the great work
WOOOHOOOO! Bring on the new pack! THANKS BACKPACKER!
I just moved to Montana, and have little to no gear to experiance these great outdoors, so as you can imagine this gear review is extremely helpful..
Sincerely,
Jake Arnfast
I love this magazine and web site. I am planning 10 days on the Talkeetna river just north of Talkeetna Alaska and I finally going to purchase lighter and newer gear. Past trips were labor intense with heavy gear. The gear review is helping me choose the gear I will use for my July trip.
Thanks for all the expert advise
